Language Based Approach Classroom Activities

General Objectives                            : Students will be able to understand what the poem is all about.
Specific Objectives                            : By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1.      Elicit personal responses about the events and characters brought up in
the poem.
2.      Write at least 6 sentences that incorporate nouns from the poem.
Moral values                                      : Teamwork, Confidence, Cooperation.

Set Induction

Rationale:
1.     To introduce the students about the topic that they about to learn.
2.     To stimulate students’ interests on the topic.
3.     To provide a structure on students’ learning.

1.      Teacher shows a series of pictures related to comparison between traditional living and modern living (for example, paper fan vs air conditioner, nature vs city)
2.      Teacher asks the students to tell what the pictures are all about.
3.      Teacher then tells the students that they are going to learn about nouns.

Pre-reading

Rationale:
1.      To familiarize the students with the reading material.
2.      To allow the students to build better understanding on the poem overall

2.      Teacher asks students to take out their literature component textbook.
3.      Teacher get through the poem with the students.
4.      Teacher then asks the students if there is any words that they do not understand in the poem.
1.      Students listen to the recitation of poem, Heir Conditioning by M. SHANmughalingam.
2.      Students read the poem from the textbook.
3.      Students ask if they have any inquiry regarding the poem.

While-reading

Rationale:
1.      To provide more information regarding the topic.
2.      To help the students construct more schemes to support their base knowledge.
3.      To keep students’ learning on track.

1.      Teacher goes through deeper on the topic
2.      Teacher explains more about nouns such as their functions, attributes and how to apply them in sentence.
3.      Teacher then projects several pictures that represent nouns using LCD.
4.      Teacher then asks what the pictures are in relation to the poem by providing quotations from the poem.
5.      Teacher asks for students to classify the pictures shown according to two categories; modern and traditional in the table on the whiteboard.
1.      Students answer when the teacher asks the relationship between the pictures to the poem.

Post-reading

Rationale:
1.      To sustain students’ understanding regarding the topic.
2.      To allow the students to demonstrate the extent of their understanding regarding the topic.
3.      To evaluate the students for improvement in the future.

1.      Teacher divides the students into two groups.
2.      Each group will be provided with a noun with an example of a sentence that use the particular noun.
3.      Teacher asks the first member of the group to write a new noun which start with the last letter of noun provided earlier. (For example, the given noun is “ball” then the next noun maybe “locker”
4.      As for the next member, he/she writes a new noun which begin with the last letter of the noun given by the earlier member respectively. (for example, if the earlier member gives “locker”, the next member should give “rope”)
5.      Each group is given 5 minutes to write as many nouns.
6.      Any similar nouns may not consider a point.
7.      Each noun provided must have a sentence that incorporates the use of the particular noun.
8.      Group with most various nouns will win.



1.      Students divide themselves into two groups.
2.      Students write a new noun which begins with the last letter of noun provided by earlier members from their own group respectively.
3.      Students write a sentence for each noun that they have provided respectively.
4.      Students must write various nouns as many as they can and not same with the other group.

1.      To conclude the lesson.
2.      To strengthen the students’ knowledge regarding the topic.
